Strength Training For Runners: Ultimate Guide

strength training for runners ultimate guide Strength Training For Runners: Ultimate Guide

I was featured on NY1 News (New York City’s local TV station) as a fitness expert discussing the benefits of strength training for runners (video clip is here: NY1 Segment). The segment is part of a series of videos to help runners prepare for the NYC Marathon.

As I was looking over my notes to help prepare for the segment, I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be cool if I shared these notes with everyone and made it into a special free guide?” Well, that’s exactly what I’ve done AND I even added a sample workout routine with exercise pics of me demonstrating the exercises. I hope you enjoy it!

Strength Training Landscape: Powerlifting vs. Bodybuilding

While there are many different types of strength training methods, two dominate the fitness landscape; Powerlifting and Bodybuilding. What’s interesting about the general methodologies of each group is that they are almost polar opposites of each other.

As I explain in this article, I think the ideal strength training program for most people lies somewhere in the middle of these two extremes (I’ve trained both ways for years). If you don’t understand some of the exercise terms I use, you can check out my article 15 Strength Training Terms You Should Know.

If you remember my Efficient Strength Training 101 article series, you know that I’m a HUGE fan of strength training to get in better shape in less time. NY1 did a feature titled “Strength Training Can Help You Shed Pounds” for busy New Yorkers looking to get leaner, healthier bodies in less time and with less hassle. It aired 6x on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 and I’m waiting on getting the clip so I can embed it in this post.

For now, here’s a link to the clip on NY1′s website: BuiltLean.com on NY1 and I have a some screenshots, which add some color below.

It’s surreal that’s actually me on TV with my BuiltLean.com shirt I bought a week before. We did at least 20 minutes of filming, which was condensed into only 2 minutes.

How to Choose a Gym That’s Right For You

how to choose a gym How to Choose a Gym Thats Right For You

Choosing a gym that’s right for you can be challenging, so I created a checklist that will make the process much easier. You can trust me because I’ve seen hundreds of gyms over the years, even in different countries. Here’s the inside scoop on how to choose a gym that’s right for you. I listed the criteria in order of importance:

1) Convenience
I think the #1 most important criterion by far is where the gym is located. If you’re living in suburbia and there’s a gym right across from your office, or within a couple minutes of your home, you should probably just use that gym. The gym that is most convenient is the one you should use, unless there is something seriously wrong (for example, the gym fails a few of the criteria I’ve listed below miserably). We all know how hard it is to make it to the gym consistently, so you might as well make going to the gym as convenient as possible.
