I’m going to reveal the truth about getting lean through a very powerful example. Let’s use Jen who is 5’4” and 140 pounds and has been struggling to lose weight. With a body fat percentage of 30%, Jen is very close to being obese (32% body fat, or greater for women is considered clinically obese). Despite some of the troubles she’s experienced, Jen is determined to lose the weight.
Before continuing Jen’s story, I must highlight that knowing Jen’s body fat percentage is so important because it measures how “lean” she is by showing her body fat versus muscle (lean body mass). The lower Jen’s body fat percentage, the leaner her body.
With a lot of dieting and a lot of cardio, Jen drops 20 pounds to 120 pounds and brags to all her friends about her weight loss. Great results, right? Not so fast…
Of the 20 pounds Jen just lost, 12 pounds came from muscle. Can you guess Jen’s new body fat percentage? I’ll just tell you…it’s still a disappointing 28%. Jen only lost 2% body fat despite losing 20 total pounds. While these results are disappointing, the following example is downright scary…
Let’s assume that of the 20 pounds Jen lost, 15 of those pounds came from muscle. Her new body fat percentage (31%) is now HIGHER than when she started! In other words, while Jen appears slightly thinner, she looks LESS lean at 120 pounds than at 140 pounds! We need to help poor Jen out…
Let’s say instead of using a very strict diet and doing tons of cardio, Jen used a different method to drop 20 pounds of fat without losing any muscle. Jen’s new body fat percentage is now an impressive 18%! Jen went from being a hair shy of obesity to being as lean as a fitness model.
